Walks around Arlesey

Arlesey is an attractive village situated in the Hiz valley which was listed in the Doomsday Book. The walks range from 1 to 4¾ miles, and one of 9 miles for the energetic walker. There are good public houses plus small shops on most routes. The walks pass local rivers, a medieval bridge, lakes and a large country house.

All the walks are easy walking. One pleasant riverside walk (No 2) is easy access with blue badge parking.

How To Get There By Car

From Junction 10 of the A1(M) turn on to the A507, and from Bedford and Shefford, also on the A507. Follow the signs for Arlesey Station.
There is ample parking at both the station and at Arlesey Village Hall car park in the centre of the village.

Start/Finish Point

This circular walk starts at the car park behind the Memorial Hall, the curved-roof building in Hitchin Road a hundred yards down from the traffic-lights.

Walk 1 - Glebe Meadow

Walk 1 Glebe Meadow Access Information

Surface Types: You will walk across surface types ranging from hard and firm with no stones greater than 5mm in size, to hard but variable surfaces with loose, variable sized stones, to grass or uncultivated earth paths.
Linear Gradient: Gradients range from 1:6 to 1:9 and between 1:14 and 1:17, the steepest being on a short section to the bridge in Glebe Meadow.
Cross Falls: Between 1:10-1:15.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 880m at the bridge.
Steps: None recorded.
Barriers: There is one kissing gate with a minimum restriction of greater than 1500mm and five kissing gates with a restriction of less than 1000mm.
Refreshments: Arlesey has a selection of pubs and shops.

Walk 2 Mill Pits Access Information

Surface Types: You will walk across surface types ranging from hard and firm with no stones greater than 5mm in size to grass or uncultivated earth paths with ruts and mud.
Linear Gradient: Gradients range from steeper than 1:6 to 1:6 to 1:9 and between 1:10 and 1:13.
Cross Falls: Between 1:10-1:15 up to the railway.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 900m on one of the bridges.
Steps: There are 32 steps up and 32 steps down over the railway - these have a maximum step height of 170mm. There are four steps when entering the common with a depth of 200mm. There are also four steps at the bridge between the weir and the railway.
Barriers: There are three kissing gates with a restriction of less than 1000mm, two kissing gates with a restriction of between 1000-1500mm and one 1-way opening gate with a width greater than 750mm.
Refreshments: Arlesey has a selection of pubs and shops.
Public Toilets: At the Village Hall, only open weekdays between 9am-12am.

Surface Types: You will walk across surface types ranging from hard and firm with no stones greater than 5mm in size to grass or uncultivated earth paths.
Linear Gradient: The steepest gradient is steeper than 1:6. Elsewhere gradients range from between 1:10-1:13 (on the shortcut), 1:14-1:17 and 1:18 or less.
Cross Falls: The steepest crossfall is 1:9 or steeper.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 800m at the bridge over the Hiz in Mill Pits meadows.
Steps: There are 10 steps in total over the bridge in Mill Pits meadows, with a maximum step height of 200mm.
Barriers: There are three kissing gates with a restriction of less than 1000mm and one 1-way opening gate with a width of greater than 750mm.
Refreshments: Arlesey has a selection of pubs and shops.
Public Toilets: Located at the Village Hall, but only open between 9am-12am weekdays.

Linear Gradient: Linear gradients range from 1:10 to 1:13 and between 1:14 and 1:17.

Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 950mm between wooden posts when exiting the park.
Steps: None recorded.
Barriers: There are eight kissing gate with a minimum restriction of less than 1000mm.

Seats: There is plenty of seating along the route at regular intervals - 3 by the river, several around the lakes, and 2 at the entrance to the park.

Walk 5 - Wilbury Hills

Walk 5 Wilbury Hills Access Information

Surface Types: You will walk across surface types ranging from hard and firm with no stones greater than 5mm in size hard and firm with no stones greater than 20mm, to grass or uncultivated earth paths with and without ruts and mud, to cultivated farmland.
Linear Gradient: Gradients range from 1:6 to 1:9 , between 1:10-1:13 and between 1:14 and 1:17. the route rises to Fairfield Park, and is steep for short lengths at the ditch crossings.
Cross Falls: The steepest cross falls are 1:9 or steeper, between the Pix and Standalone Farm and between Wilbury Hill and Arlesey Road.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 860m between wooden posts at the entrance to Fairfield Park Estate, and a width restriction of 850mm between metal posts when entering Ickleford. There is a restriction of 900m at the sleeper bridge at the start of the walk, and a squeeze gate with a restriction of 280mm after New Ramerick Farm.
Steps: There are three steps at the sleeper bridge at the start of the walk with a maximum step height of 100mm. There are 88 steps in total (44 up, 44 down), over the railway bridge at Ickleford, with a maximum step height of 150mm. There are 2 steps on a footbridge with a maximum step height of 50mm. There are 6 steps on a footbridge with a maximum height of 200mm. There are 10 steps over the bridge onto Arlesey Common with a maximum height of 150mm.
Barriers: There is one kissing gate with a minimum restriction of greater than 1500mm, six kissing gates with a restriction of less than 1000mm, one staggered barrier with a minimum restriction of less than 950mm, two 1-step stiles, two 1-way opening gates with a width of greater than 750mm, 2 kissing gates with a restriction of between 1000-1500mm, one staggered barrier barrier with a minimum restriction of greater than 950mm and one 2-step stile.

Surface Types: You will walk across surface types ranging from hard and firm with no stones greater than 5mm in size, to hard but variable surfaces with loose, variable sized stones, to grass or uncultivated earth paths.
Linear Gradient: Gradients range from 1:6 to 1:9 and 1:10 - 1:13 to between 1:14 and 1:17.
Cross Falls: The steepest cross falls are 1:9 or steeper in Etonbury Wood.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 570m between posts (an alternative to the stile) and a width restriction of 880m at the entrance to Etonbury Wood.
Steps: There is a total of 21 steps with a maximum step height of 130mm when crossing the A507.
Barriers: There is one kissing gate with a minimum restriction of less than 1000mm, one 1-step stile and three 2-step stiles. There is also one field gate with a dropped centre of 400mm high.

Walk 7 Cityfield Farm Access Information

Surface Types: You will walk across surface types ranging from hard and firm with no stones greater than 5mm in size, to hard and firm with no stones greater than 10mm, to grass or uncultivated earth paths.
Linear Gradient: The steepest linear gradients are 1:9 or steeper where you cross the railway for the second time. Elsewhere, linear gradients are between 1:14-1:17 and 1:18 or less.
Cross Falls: The steepest cross falls are 1:9 or steeper. There are also cross falls of between 1:10-1:15.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 940m at the turning just after the White Horse public house.
Steps: There are 4 steps over the ditch between the Hiz and the railway, with a maximum step height of 200mm. There is also one step up to the Hiz bridge.
Barriers: There are two kissing gates with a restriction of less than 1000mm, and one 1-way opening gate with a width of less than 750mm.

Walk 8 Poppy Hill Access Information

Surface Types: You will walk across surface types ranging from hard and firm with no stones greater than 10mm in size, to hard but variable surfaces with loose, variable sized stones (none greater than 10mm in size), to grass or uncultivated earth paths with and without ruts/mud.
Linear Gradient: The steepest linear gradient is steeper than 1:6 when crossing the track east of the railway. Other linear gradients are between 1:10 - 1:13.
Cross Falls: None recorded.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 290m at the bridge at the fishing lakes near to Poppy Hill Farm.
Steps: There are steps with a maximum step height of 130mm when crossing the A507. There are 21 steps with a maximum step height of 170mm when crossing the railway.
Barriers: There are two 1-step stiles and two 2-step stiles.
