Route Description

Take the marked footpath to the right of the Royal British Legion hall, through the woodland. Keep to the main signposted footpath (looking out for the discs with arrows on the signposts) until you reach a kissing gate and enclosed footpath which brings you into Stockgrove car park (toilets and coffee shop available).

Leave the park entrance and turn right along the road - proceed carefully as there is no pavement initially. Continue along the road to the bottom of the hill and the junction with Woburn Road. Turn left into Woburn Road and continue along the pavement past the quarry entrance.

Cross the road carefully and head for the fingerpost, where there is a stile over the fence. Cross the stile and walk along the enclosed path which runs parallel with the road. Cross another stile (at this point you should be able to see clearly into the quarry on your right). At the next stile, where you reach an open field, keep to the left hand side following the hedgerow and signposts until you reach the end of the field.

At the hedge, turn right (hedge on left) and admire the beautiful views. Leave the field through the push-open stile and wooden bridge. Turn left and walk about twenty paces up the road and turn right at the road junction. Here there are good views of the A5, woodland, Potsgrove, Battlesden and, of course, the quarry workings.

Now turn right past farm buildings to reach a signposted footpath. Climb over the stile and walk straight across the meadow to the stile in the fence. Turn right and walk along the enclosed footpath, following it as it turns left downhill. At the bottom, take the steps down onto the lane, go past the quarry entrance and then left along Reach Lane, at the back of the Cockhorse pub. Follow the lane, beside houses on the right and the quarry on the left, until it joins the main road (Birds Hill).

Turn left, cross the road and walk up Birds Hill past the beautiful clocktower on the green and the Duke's Head.

Carry on past the Axe and Compass pub to reach a fingerpost on your right. Turn right down the enclosed footpath to the kissing gate. Turn right and walk down the grassy lane to the road. Turn left down the road to reach a set of steps. Go down the steps to reach a road (called The Stile). Continue down the road until you reach the main road (called Old Linslade Road). Turn right into Old Linslade Road and continue until you reach Thrift Road on your left. Turn up Thrift Road and return to the start.
