Chilterns Country - Walk Like The Clappers

Enjoy the fresh air and fantastic views of the Chilterns countryside. These 3 circular walks take you to the top of the Chiltern Hills, across meadows carpeted in wildflowers and through magnificent beech woods. You can choose from a long, medium and short walk.

How To Get There By Car

For Harlington, leave the M1 at junction 12 and turn onto the A5120 Harlington Road and follow signs for the village.
You can park at Harlington rail station car park (there is a charge). You can also park in the pubs at Harlington or Sharpenhoe if you buy food or drink.

Start/Finish Point

The long and medium walks start from Harlington Railway Station, the short walk from the Lynmore public house in Sharpenhoe. It is also possible to follow these walks from the free car parks at Sundon Hills and Sharpenhoe Clappers.

Access and General Information

Length: Long - 7miles (11.2 km), Medium - 5½ miles (8.8 km), Short - 1½ miles (2.4 km)
Time: Long - allow 3½ to 4 hours, Medium - allow 2¾ to 3¼ hours , Short - allow ½ to 1 hour
Access Information:
Surface Types: You will walk across surface types ranging from hard and firm with no stones larger than 5mm, to hard but variable surface with loose, variable sized stone, to grass or uncultivated earth paths with and without ruts and mud, to cultivated farmland.
Linear Gradient: The steepest linear gradient is steeper than 1:6, there are also linear gradients of between 1:6-1:9 and between 1:10-1:13.
Cross Falls: The steepest are 1:9 or steeper on the path in the woods near to the village of Sundon.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 700mm between a post and a drop down into a ditch on leaving Harlington. There is also a restriction of 650mm on the Sharpenhoe Clappers path.
Steps: The maximum step height is 150mm on the long walk – this is the average height of a long flight of 153 steps. On the medium walk, there are 5 steps with a height of 200m. On the short walk, there are 8 steps of 250mm high by the car park.
Barriers: There are 4 kissing gates with a restriction of less than 1000mm, 5 kissing gate with a restriction of between 1000-1500mm, 4 one-way opening gates with a width of greater than 750mm and 2 one-step stiles.
Refreshments: There is a selection of pubs and shops at Harlington.
Public Toilets: None recorded.
Picnic Tables: None recorded.
Seats: There are 5 seats on the long walk – in Sharpenhoe Clappers, on Sundon Hills and between Sundon and Harlington.
