This is a Woodland Trust site. The two woods of Swineshead and Spanoak are about one kilometre apart. They consist of a wide variety of trees, recently created woodland glades and wide walks from which birds such as woodpeckers and crossbills may be spotted.

How To Get There By Car

Swineshead is to the east of the village of Pertenhall which is approximately 12 miles north of Bedford. The Kimbolton Road, B660 takes you straight from Bedford to Pertenhall, then take the road to Swineshead. There is limited on road parking in Swineshead.

The woods are accessed from the public footpath at the end of Sandye Lane in the village of Swineshead.

Access Information:

Please note: Swineshead Wood is generally more accessible than Spanoak Wood. The paths in Swineshead Wood are better maintained. In Spanoak Wood, the grass is left longer with many tussocks and tree roots and care should be taken.

Surface Types:   You will walk across surfaces ranging from hard but variable with loose, variable sized stones, to grass or uncultivated earth paths with and without mud or ruts.      

Linear Gradient: The steepest gradient is steeper than 1:6 for 3 metres on either side of the dry stream bed. Otherwise, there are gradients of between 1:6-1:9, of between 1:10-1:13, of between 1:14-1:17 and of 1:18 or less.

Cross Falls:  The steepest cross fall is steeper than 1:9. There are also cross falls of between 1:10-1:15, of between 1:16-1:20, between 1:21-1:25 and of 1:26 or less.

Width Restriction:  There is a width restriction of 760mm on the bridge at the north eastern edge of the woods.
Steps:  This bridge also has a step with a maximum step height of 210mm.

Barriers: There are two 1-way opening gates with a widthh of greater than 750mm and one staggered barrier with a minimum restriction of greater than 950mm.

Refreshments:  There is a pub, the Five Bells, in Riseley.

Seats: There are some fallen trees which can be used as seating.
