Hockliffe is on the A5 road some four miles north of Dunstable. The original village was centred around the parish church to the west, but moved to the main road (Watling Street) in later medieval times. By the early 19th century there were no less than twelve inns to cater for the many stagecoaches passing through the village. The Limes and the White Horse are two fine surviving examples of former coaching inns. Hockliffe House contains a small remnant of the medieval hospital of St. John, while Trinity Hall Farm was once the home of the novelist Arnold Bennett.
