Details

Houghton Regis merges into the northern side of Dunstable and is a mainly urban community. It has extensive modern housing, shopping and industrial developments. However, the old village green still remains, together with Houghton Hall, a fine chequerbrick mansion dating from about 1700. The parish church is also an impressive Perpendicular building with a chequerwork exterior of flint and Totternhoe stone. To the north-west is the hamlet of Thorn. Here the Baptist burial ground, where Bunyan once preached to vast crowds, still survives. Tucked away on the other side of the A5 is the attractive little hamlet of Sewell. Nearby are the extensive earthworks of the Iron Age fortification known as Maiden Bower.
