Gullivers Spinney - Souldrop



Gullivers Spinney is a Woodland Trust site. This interesting area of woodland has been planted with a mix of both native and trees from overseas, including the Western Red Cedar and Grand Fir from North America. The site includes ponds to encourage a wide variety of wildlife.

How To Get There By Car

The woodland lies to the east of the village of Souldrop which is located west of the A6 approximately 10 miles to the north of Bedford.
There is limited parking. Please park thoughtfully.


Start/Finish Point

The wood lies in Back Lane which is accessed just to the north of Souldrop.


Access and General Information



Surface Types: You will walk across a surface of grass or uncultivated earth paths without any ruts.
Linear Gradient: There are two sections with gradients steeper than 1:6 - one close to the entrance nearest to Souldrop, and one in the valley between the two bridges. There is also a 2 metre stretch of 1:6 gradient near to the middle entrance. Elsewhere, there are gradients of between 1:6-1:9, of between 1:10-1:13, of between 1:14-1:17 and of 1:18 or less.
Cross Falls: There are crossfalls of 1:9 or steeper between the Souldrop entrance and the first bridge, and on one of the set of steps. Elsewhere, there are cross falls of between 1:10-1:15, of between 1:21-1:25 and of 1:26 or less.
Width Restriction: There is a width restriction of 1000mm on the first bridge you meet from the Souldrop village entrance.
Steps: There are three sets of steps. One of 17 steps with a maximum step height of 110mm, one of 15 steps with a maximum step height of 130mm and one of five steps with a maximum step height of 120mm.
Barriers: There are 2 staggered barriers with a minimum restriction of less than 950mm and one 1-way opening gate with a width of greater than 750mm.
Refreshments: There is a pub, The Bedford Arms, in Souldrop.
